What Is Oat Milk?

Welcome back to The Coffee Blog (TCB), Southern Africa’s largest coffee blog! Today, we’re diving into the creamy, dreamy world of oat milk. Whether you’re a vegan, lactose intolerant, or just curious about this popular dairy alternative, oat milk has something to offer everyone. Let’s explore what oat milk is, how it’s made, its benefits, and why it has become a beloved choice in coffee shops worldwide.

What Exactly Is Oat Milk?

Oat milk is a plant-based milk alternative made by processing oats in water. Its rise to popularity in coffee houses can be attributed to its creamy texture and neutral flavor, making it a versatile substitute for cow’s milk. Not only is oat milk vegan, but it is also free from soy and nuts, which makes it a safe option for those with certain allergies.

Oat milk can vary in texture from thin to thick and luscious, depending on how it’s made. Special barista versions are designed to be thicker and steam well, making them perfect for lattes and other hot beverages.

The Ingredients in Oat Milk

While the base of oat milk is simply oats and water, most commercial brands add a variety of ingredients to enhance its nutritional profile and stability. Common additives include vitamins like riboflavin and Vitamin D, and stabilizers like gellan gum and locust bean gum. Some oat milks, particularly the “full fat” or “barista” versions, also include oils like canola oil to improve texture and frothing capabilities.

What Does Oat Milk Taste Like?

Oat milk is often described as having a mild, slightly sweet taste that is reminiscent of oatmeal. According to Nathanael May, Senior Manager of Training & Specialty Coffee at Campbell’s (parent company of Pacific Foods), “Oat milk is, for a lot of people, the least surprising flavor of alternative milk when they taste it for the first time. It gives that very nostalgic, comforting, classic breakfast flavor.”

In coffee and tea, oat milk provides a creamy but neutral base that complements the beverage without overpowering it. Different brands may have variations in flavor intensity, but overall, oat milk maintains a consistent and pleasant taste.

How Is Oat Milk Made?

Oat milk production involves mixing oats with water, which can be done using various methods. A popular method is enzymatic hydrolysis, where enzymes break down the oats, releasing sugars and creating a naturally sweet taste. You can also make oat milk at home by soaking oats in water, blending the mixture, and then straining it to remove the solids.

“We’re essentially doing the same thing that you do when you make oatmeal when we make oat milk, we’re just ensuring that that comes out as a liquid instead of a porridge,” explains May.

The Rise of Oat Milk

Oat milk gained widespread popularity in the late 2010s, thanks in part to the efforts of the Swedish brand Oatly. Their aggressive marketing and presence in cafes worldwide captured the attention of baristas and consumers alike. Other companies quickly followed suit, including Pacific Foods, Califia Farms, Chobani, Silk, Minor Figures, and Ghost Town Oats. Today, oat milk is a staple in many coffee shops and grocery stores.

Is Oat Milk Gluten-Free and Organic?

Not all oat milk is gluten-free due to the risk of cross-contamination during processing. While many brands offer gluten-free options, it’s important to check labels if you have a gluten sensitivity. Similarly, while some oat milks are organic, ensuring both organic and gluten-free status can be cost-prohibitive, so manufacturers often prioritize one over the other.

Health Benefits of Oat Milk

Oat milk is typically fortified with vitamins and minerals like calcium and riboflavin, similar to other milk alternatives. It is lower in protein compared to cow’s milk and soy milk but higher than almond milk and coconut milk. Oat milk that includes added oils may taste richer, though some consumers may prefer to avoid these oils.

Environmental Impact of Oat Milk

Oat milk is considered one of the more environmentally friendly plant-based milks. Oats require less water and fewer resources to grow compared to other crops like almonds. Moreover, oats are a rotational crop, which benefits soil health and biodiversity. Conventional dairy farming, especially on a large scale, tends to use more resources and produce more greenhouse gases than plant-based alternatives. However, small organic dairy farms might have different environmental impacts.

Uses for Oat Milk

Oat milk is incredibly versatile. Besides being perfect for coffee and tea, it makes an excellent base for smoothies, a great addition to cereal, and can even be used in baking and cooking. And yes, you can even use oat milk in your oatmeal for an extra creamy breakfast experience!

Final Thoughts

Oat milk has rightfully earned its place in the hearts of coffee lovers and the dairy-averse alike. Its creamy texture, pleasant taste, and environmental benefits make it a fantastic choice for anyone looking to switch up their milk game. Whether you’re enjoying it in a latte, a smoothie, or straight from the glass, oat milk is a delicious and versatile option.
