Unlike supermarket counterparts filled with additives and sweeteners, bottled cold brews celebrate simplicity: coffee and water, pure and unadulterated. Their appeal lies in the convenience they offer—a quick pour over ice transforms any moment into a refreshing coffee break.
Tasting Adventure: Exploring Sixteen Bottled Coffees
At The Coffee Blog, we embarked on a tasting journey of sixteen bottled coffees from fifteen different companies, each promising a unique experience over ice. Most were cold-brewed, with one exception using a proprietary pressure brewing system. From concentrates to pure brews, these offerings showcased a spectrum of flavors and brewing techniques.
Our tastings revealed intriguing nuances influenced by roast levels, brewing methods, and, notably, the origin of the coffee beans. Among our top-rated discoveries was the Slingshot Coffee Cold-Brew (94), brewed from an Ethiopia coffee that preserved its bright sweetness and complex fruit and floral notes—a testament to the coffee’s journey from bean to bottle to ice.
Celebrating African Excellence
African coffees dominated our highest ratings, reflecting their inherent flavors and quality. The Alchemy (92), crafted from a dried-in-the-fruit Ethiopia, and Black Medicine (93), likely featuring a similar profile, stood out for their bold yet nuanced tastes. Even the Pier Coffee Cold Brewed Concentrate (91), sourced from Burundi, impressed with its distinct black currant and floral tones, showcasing the diversity of African coffee profiles.
Cold Brew: Impact on Flavor and Experience
Cold brewing coffee—whether through traditional methods or proprietary systems—transforms the flavor profile compared to its hot-brewed counterparts. While it retains the essential structure of coffee—mouthfeel, acidity, and balance—it tends to mute flavor notes like fruits and chocolates, which are more pronounced in hot brews.
However, this process enhances sweetness and delivers a smoother mouthfeel, making it particularly appealing to those sensitive to acidity. The best bottled cold coffees we reviewed maintained a refreshing quality, balancing subtlety with enough character to surprise and delight.
The Concentrate Challenge
Navigating concentrates presented an interesting challenge during our evaluation. Manufacturers’ recommendations for dilution often resulted in underwhelming cups. Adjusting the ratios—typically two parts concentrate to one part water—revealed a better balance, highlighting the coffee’s flavors without overpowering intensity.
For instance, Slingshot Coffee’s concentrate, although not reviewed here, mirrored the quality of its straight cold-brew counterpart when diluted to our recommended ratio. This approach ensured that every sip delivered a satisfying coffee experience.
