Celebrate Pride with a Cupcake-Inspired Latte!

Pride Month is a time of celebration, and Equator Coffees is pulling out all the stops to honor this vibrant and inclusive event. If you’re in Mill Valley, make your way to Equator’s Proof Lab outpost, where they’ll be serving their special Celebration Cake Latte for one weekend only, starting Thursday, June 22nd. This sprinkle-forward, espresso-based beverage is more than just a drink; it’s a party in a cup!

The Inspiration Behind the Celebration Cake Latte

We had the pleasure of speaking with the drink’s creator, Devorah Freudiger, Equator’s Director of Coffee Culture and a 2023 Sprudge Twenty honoree. Devorah shared her enthusiasm for the drink and the inspiration behind it.

“This drink is confetti cake in a cup!” Devorah exclaimed. “Having baked a cake for a ten-year-old’s birthday, I can confidently say that more is more. So this drink is EXTRA. It’s a latte with cupcake syrup, and it really tastes like butter, sugar, and vanilla. Then we color the milk with food coloring so we can pour rainbow rosettas, top with rainbow sprinkles, and we’ve got a real party! Perfect for a ten-year-old’s birthday and Pride.”

The Perfect Blend: Eye of the Tiger Espresso

A latte is only as good as its espresso, and the Celebration Cake Latte is no exception. Equator Coffees uses their Eye of the Tiger Espresso, a blend that pairs perfectly with the cupcake syrup.

“The cupcake syrup goes well with a chocolatey espresso,” Devorah explained. This combination of flavors ensures that every sip is a delightful mix of rich espresso and sweet, buttery cake.

When to Enjoy the Celebration Cake Latte

While this colorful concoction might tempt you to indulge at any time, Devorah recommends enjoying it after participating in the Tour d’Equator: Pride Ride on Sunday, June 25th.

“I think it’s better as an after-ride treat. A large cup of sweet milk before a long ride doesn’t sound great to me,” she advised. So, after you’ve worked up a sweat and shown your Pride spirit, reward yourself with this decadent delight.

Devorah Freudiger’s Pride Weekend

Devorah’s personal celebration plans highlight the diverse ways people can honor Pride. “Since becoming a mother, I’ve traded parties and parades for drag story hour at the library,” she shared. “This weekend, we have a birthday party for a preschooler, but it’s a two-mom household, so maybe this counts as a Pride event?”

This blend of family life and Pride festivities embodies the inclusive spirit of the event, showing that there are many ways to celebrate and participate in Pride.

Fond Memories at Proof Lab

Devorah has countless fond memories at Proof Lab, from grand openings to intimate moments with regulars. “Too many to count!” she said. “I loved having a big party when we opened and seeing so many coffee friends cross the bridge to see what we have built. I met Erna Knutsen that weekend!”

Beyond the big events, it’s the everyday interactions that stand out. “My favorite memories are those mundane but special moments that happen at all cafes. Giving someone their first cup of coffee that ‘doesn’t taste like coffee’ or knowing a regular is pregnant before their own family because they switch to decaf.”

Celebrate with Equator Coffees

Equator Coffees is not just a place to grab a cup of coffee; it’s a community hub that celebrates diversity and inclusivity. The Celebration Cake Latte is a testament to their commitment to creating joyful and memorable experiences for their customers.

Practical Tips for Creating Your Own Celebration Cake Latte

If you’re inspired by Equator Coffees and want to bring a bit of that magic home, here are some tips for creating your own Celebration Cake Latte:

  1. Start with Quality Espresso: Choose a rich, chocolatey espresso blend. If you can’t get Eye of the Tiger Espresso, look for something with similar flavor notes.
  2. Make the Cupcake Syrup: Combine butter, sugar, and vanilla to create a syrup that mimics the flavor of a cupcake. Heat until the sugar dissolves, then let it cool.
  3. Color Your Milk: Use food coloring to tint your milk. This will add a fun, festive touch to your latte art.
  4. Create Cold Foam: Froth or aerate your colored milk until it’s thick and creamy. You can use a blender, an aerator, a French press, or even a mason jar to achieve the right consistency.
  5. Assemble Your Latte: Combine the espresso and cupcake syrup, then pour in the frothed milk. Top with rainbow sprinkles for that final festive flair.
