Unveiling the Charm of Vietnamese Iced Coffee

What Is Vietnamese Iced Coffee?

Vietnamese iced coffee, known as Cà Phê Sữa Đá, is a much-loved drink made by combining strong, dark coffee with sweetened condensed milk and ice.

It’s known for its intense coffee flavour and the satisfying contrast between bold, bitter coffee and rich, creamy sweetness. Originally from Vietnam, the drink has become popular around the world thanks to its distinctive brewing method and refreshingly indulgent taste, earning it a place among the world’s most unique coffee drinks.

And if you’re looking for something different from your usual iced latte on a warm Cape Town afternoon, it’s well worth trying.

Why Make Vietnamese Iced Coffee at Home?

You may have come across Vietnamese iced coffee at a speciality café, but making it yourself gives you much more control over the final cup.

You can adjust the strength of the coffee, decide how sweet you want it and experiment with different beans and brewing methods. Best of all, you only need a few basic ingredients and a little bit of time.

Once you’ve got the method down, it’s an easy drink to make whenever you’re in the mood for something cold, bold and seriously coffee-forward.

Crafting Your Homemade Vietnamese Iced Coffee

Ingredients You’ll Need

  • 2 tablespoons Vietnamese ground coffee or dark roast coffee beans
  • 240 ml cold filtered water
  • 1–2 spoonfuls sweetened condensed milk, adjusted to taste
  • 120 ml ice – coffee ice cubes are optional for a stronger brew

Equipment

  • A serving glass
  • A drip coffee maker with an over-ice setting, or a Vietnamese phin, the traditional coffee filter

Step-by-Step Recipe

1. Prepare Your Glass

Start by adding approximately 120 ml of ice to your serving glass.

If you’re using a coffee machine designed to brew directly over ice, position the glass beneath the pour spout if possible. This allows the hot coffee to flow directly over the ice and chill almost immediately.

2. Set Up Your Brewer

If your drip coffee machine has an over-ice setting, follow the manufacturer’s instructions for using it.

Alternatively, you can use a traditional Vietnamese phin, one of the many coffee brewing methods worth exploring, or adapt a standard drip coffee maker to brew the coffee directly over the ice.

3. Brew the Coffee

Add 2 tablespoons of Vietnamese ground coffee to your filter.

The amount can be adjusted depending on how strong you like your coffee, but around 2 tablespoons of coffee to 240 ml of water provides a suitably bold starting point.

Begin brewing. If your coffee machine doesn’t have an over-ice function, you can simply brew the coffee directly over the ice in your serving glass.

4. Add the Sweetened Condensed Milk

Once the coffee has finished brewing, add 1–2 spoonfuls of sweetened condensed milk directly to the glass.

Stir everything together well. The condensed milk should blend into the coffee, creating the rich, creamy sweetness that makes Vietnamese iced coffee so distinctive.

Then all that’s left to do is enjoy it.

Tips for Perfect Vietnamese Iced Coffee

Choose the Right Coffee

For the most traditional flavour, look for Vietnamese ground coffee. These coffees are often known for rich aromas and chocolatey flavours that work particularly well with sweetened condensed milk.

If Vietnamese coffee isn’t readily available, a good dark roast is an excellent alternative and will still give you the bold flavour needed for this drink.

Customise the Sweetness

The amount of condensed milk is completely up to you.

If you enjoy a sweeter coffee, add a little more. If you prefer the coffee itself to take centre stage, start with less condensed milk and add more if needed.

It’s one of the easiest parts of the recipe to adjust to your own taste.

Try Coffee Ice Cubes

Regular ice works perfectly well, but coffee ice cubes are a clever option if you want to keep the drink particularly strong.

Simply brew some coffee, allow it to cool and freeze it in an ice cube tray. As the cubes melt, they add more coffee rather than watering down your drink.

This is especially useful when you’re enjoying an iced coffee slowly on a warm summer afternoon.

Conclusion: Enjoy Your Homemade Cà Phê Sữa Đá

And there you have it – Vietnamese iced coffee made right in your own kitchen.

The combination of strong coffee, sweetened condensed milk and ice creates a drink that’s bold, creamy and incredibly refreshing. It’s simple enough for an everyday coffee, but different enough to make your usual coffee routine a little more interesting.

Whether you’re already familiar with Vietnamese coffee or trying it for the first time, Cà Phê Sữa Đá is a great reminder of just how many ways there are to enjoy coffee.
