Why Make Your Own Keurig Mocha?
Sure, you can pop a mocha-flavoured coffee pod into your Keurig and call it a day, but making your own gives you much more control over the final cup.
A homemade Keurig mocha can be rich, creamy and properly chocolatey, while still letting you decide exactly how sweet or indulgent you want it to be. It’s also easy to customise, whether you’re avoiding dairy, want to add a different flavour or simply fancy a little more chocolate.
And let’s be honest, there is something satisfying about making a coffee-shop-style drink in your own kitchen.
Whether you’re already a serious coffee lover or you’re just starting to explore different ways of enjoying coffee at home, this recipe is an easy one to add to your repertoire, alongside our other Keurig K-Cafe recipes.
Keurig Mocha Recipe
Ingredients
- 1 regular K-Cup, preferably a dark roast
- 125 ml milk, heated
- 1 teaspoon cocoa powder or 2–3 tablespoons chocolate sauce or chocolate chips
- Sugar, optional and to taste
- Whipped cream, for topping
Directions
1. Prepare the Chocolate Base
Heat the milk until steaming in a microwave-safe mug or in a saucepan on the stove.
Add your choice of cocoa powder, chocolate sauce or chocolate chips and stir well until everything has melted or combined smoothly. You want the mixture to be creamy and, if possible, slightly frothy.
If you’re using cocoa powder, you may want to add a little sugar at this stage if you prefer a sweeter mocha.
2. Brew Your Coffee
Place the mug containing your prepared chocolate milk mixture into the Keurig machine.
Brew one regular K-Cup using the smallest cup setting, around 120–180 ml, depending on how strong you want your coffee.
A dark roast is a great choice here because its bold flavour holds its own against the chocolate and milk.
3. Combine and Garnish
Give the brewed coffee and chocolate milk mixture a good stir until everything is combined.
Taste it and add a little sugar if needed.
For the finishing touch, top your mocha with whipped cream. If you’re going all out, you can add marshmallows or a little grated chocolate on top as well.
Pro Tips for the Best Keurig Mocha
Go Creamy
For a richer, creamier mocha, use full-cream or 2% milk.
If you prefer a dairy-free option, oat, almond and coconut milk can all work well. Oat milk is particularly handy if you want a creamy texture without using dairy.
Play Around with the Flavour
One of the best things about making your own mocha is that you don’t have to stick to one recipe.
Peppermint Mocha: Add a few drops of peppermint extract to the chocolate mixture for a cool, refreshing twist.
White Chocolate Mocha: Swap the regular chocolate for white chocolate chips for a sweeter, more indulgent drink.
You can also adjust the amount of chocolate or sugar depending on whether you like your coffee rich and bitter or sweet and dessert-like.
