The city of Dallas is positively buzzing over Mister Pop, one of three new signature drinks developed by Cultivar Coffee’s creative mastermind, Jared Hamilton. Hamilton describes Mister Pop as a drink inspired by the beloved Dr. Pepper and a memorable cascara fizz he enjoyed at Blue Bottle Studio in Kyoto. “Mister Pop is all about nostalgia,” Hamilton says. “There is nothing better on a hot Texas summer day than an ice-cold Dr. Pepper!”
Central to the creation of Mister Pop is Cultivar’s use of the Ground Control Brewer. This innovative piece of equipment allows the team to craft a complex and flavorful coffee concentrate that serves as the base for their signature drink.
Ingredients:
Brewing: Using a brew ratio of 1:4.5, the Ground Control Brewer performs a three-infusion process. The first step involves adding the ground coffee, cacao nibs, nutmeg, and cinnamon to a filter-lined basket.
Extraction: The brewer utilizes a vacuum to transfer the solution to a holding vessel, adding fresh hot water for each infusion. This method allows for the extraction of a strong, sweet, and smooth concentrate without the unwanted bitter flavors.
Once the coffee concentrate is ready, the team at Cultivar transforms it into a delectable syrup that forms the heart of Mister Pop.
By blending these ingredients, Cultivar Coffee creates a syrup that’s both rich and nuanced, perfectly capturing the essence of Dr. Pepper while maintaining a subtle coffee undertone.
Hamilton and his team bottle this unique syrup, ready to be transformed into the Mister Pop drink. “We are all about leaning on technology in coffee to increase creativity,” Hamilton explains. “This enables us to batch larger quantities of ingredients for signature drinks, making the process less tedious and allowing us to deliver better hospitality and speedier service for our guests.”
Since its debut on June 1st, Mister Pop has been a runaway success. “People love it,” Hamilton enthuses. “A lot of people who usually stick to espresso, iced coffee, or cold brew are enjoying it. This drink doesn’t taste much like coffee until you’re finished, leaving a mild coffee flavor that lingers pleasantly.”
One of the most interesting aspects of Mister Pop is its appeal to a broad audience. Hamilton notes that even guests who are typically set in their coffee ways are intrigued by this drink. “We’ve had several instances where guests sample it and return later in the day to purchase one for themselves!”
The reception to Mister Pop has been overwhelmingly positive. One customer described the experience as “a delightful journey through flavors, with the initial taste of sweet nostalgia and a sophisticated coffee finish.” Another customer remarked, “It’s the perfect summer drink! Light, refreshing, and with just the right amount of sweetness.”
