Freshly roasted coffee beans are a delicacy. After roasting, coffee beans release a significant amount of CO2, particularly in the first few days. To maintain their freshness and flavor, it’s crucial to let the CO2 escape while keeping oxygen, light, heat, and moisture out. This is where the BeanSafe Coffee Storage Container comes into play, offering a specialized solution to these challenges.
The BeanSafe Coffee Storage Container is engineered to provide a one-way valve and airtight seal, ensuring your coffee beans stay fresh. While it’s true that no container can completely protect against heat if your storage environment is hot, the BeanSafe does an admirable job in managing the other elements. The BeanSafe’s valve system is ingeniously simple. It’s a piece of silicone rubber with a small hole covered by a glass bead. As CO2 builds up, the bead moves to let the gas escape and then returns to its position to block oxygen. Unlike the Friis, which requires periodic valve replacement, the BeanSafe claims its valve never needs replacement. While this might sound too good to be true, it’s designed to last as long as the silicone remains intact.
A notable drawback of the Friis is its tendency to tip over when the lid is open. The BeanSafe, on the other hand, remains stable, making it easier to use. Additionally, the BeanSafe comes with a scoop and a reusable Keurig K-Cup compatible pod, adding extra value to your purchase.
To test the BeanSafe, I stored freshly roasted coffee beans in both the BeanSafe and the Friis for a week. Although I couldn’t measure CO2 levels or oxygen ingress directly, I found that the coffee tasted equally fresh from both containers. I brewed coffee using espresso, drip, and cold-brew methods, and the flavor remained consistent and excellent across all methods.
The BeanSafe containers in stainless steel and BPA-free polypropylene come with useful extras like a scoop and a reusable Keurig K-Cup compatible pod. These additions are perfect for those who enjoy making single-serve coffee without compromising on quality. The inclusion of a reusable pod is especially beneficial for reducing waste and saving money compared to pre-packaged K-Cups.
While Friis advises against storing ground coffee due to the risk of clogging the valve, the BeanSafe can handle it without issue. This feature is handy for occasions when you need to grind your coffee in advance, such as for camping trips or weekend getaways.
One concern I had with the BeanSafe was the durability of the plastic clips on the lid. After only a few uses, I noticed stress marks on the clips. While BeanSafe assures us that these clips have been tested for durability, only time will tell how well they hold up. Another minor issue is the lack of anti-skid material on the bottom of the container. Adding a soft, anti-skid base would prevent it from sliding on kitchen counters and reduce noise from metal-on-tile contact.
At approximately $25 for the stainless steel version and $20 for the BPA-free polypropylene version, the BeanSafe Coffee Storage Container offers an affordable and aesthetically pleasing solution for coffee lovers. It addresses many of the issues found in other coffee storage containers, making it a great upgrade if you’re currently using non-valved storage.
