Inverted AeroPress Brewing: A Twist for Tastier Coffee
Welcome back to The Coffee Blog (TCB), Southern Africa’s largest coffee blog where we dive into everything coffee! Today, we’re exploring a brewing method that could elevate your AeroPress coffee game: the inverted brewing method. If you’re new to AeroPress or looking to perfect your technique, this guide is for you.
Why the Inverted AeroPress Method?
The AeroPress is a beloved coffee maker known for its versatility, portability, and affordability. Since its invention in 2005, coffee enthusiasts have experimented with various brewing techniques to enhance its capabilities. One such method is the inverted or upside-down technique, favored by many for its ability to produce a richer, fuller-flavored coffee.
The standard AeroPress method, as described in the instructions, has the filter at the bottom, allowing water to drip through immediately. While effective, this can sometimes lead to under-extraction. The inverted method flips this process on its head, providing more control and reducing leaks, which can significantly improve your coffee’s quality.
Benefits of the Inverted Method
- Full Immersion Brewing: The inverted method allows the coffee grounds to be fully immersed in water throughout the brewing process, enhancing flavor extraction.
- Controlled Steeping: Unlike the standard method, the inverted technique prevents premature dripping, allowing you to steep the coffee for as long as you want.
- Rich Flavor: Coffee oils, which contribute to a richer taste, rise to the top during steeping and are more likely to end up in your cup with the inverted method.
- Less Mess: Cleanup is easier because fewer coffee grounds stick to the plunger.
What You Need
Before diving into the brewing steps, gather the following tools and ingredients:
- Aerobie AeroPress
- AeroPress Paper Filter (or reusable metal filter)
- 19 grams of whole coffee beans
- Hot water (200-208ºF / 94-98ºC)
- Kettle (gooseneck recommended)
- Coffee mug
- Burr coffee grinder (recommended)
- Coffee scale (recommended)
Step-by-Step Inverted AeroPress Brewing Instructions
Step 1: Weigh and Grind the Coffee
Start by weighing your coffee beans. While the AeroPress scoop provides roughly 17 grams (about 2 tablespoons), I recommend using 19 grams for a more robust brew. Grind your coffee to a consistency between drip and espresso. Finer grinds shorten brew time, while coarser grinds extend it—so adjust according to your preference.
Step 2: Set Up the Inverted AeroPress
Position the AeroPress plunger facing upwards on your countertop. Attach the brewing chamber, stopping just below the number 4. Use the plastic funnel to add your ground coffee into the chamber, ensuring all the grounds make it inside.
Step 3: Insert and Wet the Paper Filter
Place a paper filter into the plastic cap and wet it to remove any paper taste and ensure it sticks to the cap. Doing this over your coffee mug also preheats the mug, enhancing your coffee experience. Don’t forget to discard the water before brewing.
Step 4: Add Hot Water and Stir
Heat your water to 200-205ºF. Pour it into the AeroPress up to position 1. Stir to ensure all the coffee grounds are saturated. This step is crucial for even extraction.
Step 5: Secure the Filter Cap
Firmly hold the AeroPress at the joint where the plunger meets the chamber and screw the filter cap onto the chamber. This setup minimizes the risk of spills during the flip.
Step 6: Time, Flip, and Plunge
Steep your coffee for 60-90 seconds. When ready, carefully flip the AeroPress onto your coffee mug. This part can be tricky, so take your time to avoid spills. Once in position, press the plunger down slowly and steadily, aiming for a 20-30 second plunge time.
Step 7: Top Up with Water
After plunging, you’ll have a concentrated coffee shot. Enjoy it as is for a strong espresso-like drink, or dilute it with hot water to make an Americano. Stir well to blend.
Tips for Perfecting Your Brew
- Experiment with Variables: Play around with grind size, water temperature, and steep time to find your perfect brew.
- Use Fresh Beans: Freshly roasted beans make a significant difference in flavor.
- Consistent Grinding: A burr grinder provides a consistent grind, crucial for even extraction.
Final Thoughts
The inverted AeroPress method offers a richer, more controlled brewing experience. It’s a favorite among baristas and coffee enthusiasts for good reason. While the standard method is reliable and beginner-friendly, the inverted technique allows for greater experimentation and flavor enhancement.
What’s your go-to AeroPress method? Try both techniques and see which one suits your taste best. Remember, the joy of coffee brewing lies in experimentation and personalization.
