History of Chemex:
The Chemex Coffee Maker was invented in 1941 by Dr. Peter Schlumbohm, an eccentric chemist with over 300 patents to his name. His vision was to create functional yet beautiful objects for everyday use. With Chemex, he aimed not only to simplify the brewing process but also to make the vessel itself a work of art.
Chemex Recipe:
Equipment:
- Chemex Coffee Maker
- Kettle
- 92-96°C Water
- Medium-Coarse Grind Coffee Beans
- Paper Filters
Method:
- Preparation:
- Place a paper filter into the Chemex, ensuring the thick (3-layered side) covers the spout.
- Boil your kettle and rinse the paper filter. Remove excess water.
- Brewing:
- Add coffee grounds into the filter according to your brew ratio.
- Pour 50g – 100g of water in a circular motion to saturate the coffee grounds. Allow it to bloom for about 30 seconds*.
- Slowly add the remaining water over the coffee grounds in a circular motion to complete your brew ratio.
- Serve & Enjoy:
- Once your brew is finished, remove the filter and enjoy your flavorful cup of coffee!
Brew Ratios:
- 3 Cup: 20g Coffee / 320g Water
- 6 Cup: 40g / 640g
- 8 Cup: 60g / 960g
- 10 Cup: 80g / 1280g
Notes:
- Bloom: This is when the coffee grounds inflate and bubbles appear. It occurs as gas releases from the coffee during roasting, allowing the water to extract the full potential of the coffee’s aromatics & oils.
- Customization: Adjust the brew ratio to suit your preferred strength and flavor. You can make a stronger brew by reducing the ratio.
The Chemex brewing method not only produces exceptional coffee but also adds an elegant touch to your brewing routine. Experiment with different beans, grind sizes, and pouring techniques to find your perfect cup!
