Welcome to The Coffee Blog (TCB), Southern Africa’s largest coffee blog website! As we dive into the new year, many of us are considering a refreshing start with Dry January. Since its inception in 2013 by Alcohol Change UK, Dry January has grown significantly, with over 130,000 participants expected next year. This movement isn’t just about giving up alcohol for a month; it offers numerous benefits like improved sleep, lower blood pressure, and reduced cholesterol levels. Plus, you might find yourself more productive without the lingering effects of a hangover.
However, we get it. A good beer can be a delightful treat, especially after a long week. As the holiday indulgences fade, maintaining a completely dry January might seem daunting. But fear not! We’ve compiled a list of our favorite alcohol-free beers to help you enjoy the experience without compromising on flavor or satisfaction.
Lucky Saint
The Beer
Lucky Saint’s journey to creating a satisfying alcohol-free beer is a story of determination. Founder Luke Boase spent several years and tested 60,000 liters of beer to develop Lucky Saint, a 0.5% alcohol beer that rivals its full-strength counterparts. With biscuity malts and a smooth, fresh finish, it delivers that German-lager character you’d expect at Oktoberfest.
Why We Love It
This beer addresses the common complaint that alcohol-free options often lack that “something” which makes beer enjoyable. Lucky Saint manages to hit the mark, providing a refreshingly satisfying experience.
TCB Rating: 8/10
While it’s delicious and refreshing, the 0.5% alcohol content might feel slightly off for those committed to a strictly alcohol-free month. However, it’s as close as you can get to the real deal, making it a fantastic choice.
Days Lager
The Beer
Founded during the second lockdown by Duncan and Mike in Scotland, Days Lager uses soft water from the Lammermuir hills and local ingredients to create a crisp, 0% alcohol beer. Their brewing process is unique because it’s designed to never produce alcohol, setting it apart from other de-alcoholized beers.
Why We Love It
Days Lager isn’t just about great beer; it’s also about giving back. They donate 2% of all sales to organizations that support mental health initiatives. Their lager and pale ale are both excellent, but the lager’s crisp style is our favorite.
TCB Rating: 9/10
It’s impressive how far alcohol-free beers have come in such a short time. Days Lager stands out as one of the best, offering a truly satisfying experience without any alcohol.
Beavertown Lazer Crush
The Beer
Beavertown’s Lazer Crush is a 0.3% IPA that takes a different approach to brewing. Instead of limiting the malt or de-alcoholizing the beer after fermentation, they use a special yeast strain that ferments malt without producing alcohol, adding delightful peachy hints.
Why We Love It
This beer is packed with pleasant tropical fruit flavors and a balanced bitterness. It’s a great choice if you’re looking for something a bit different from the typical fizzy refreshment of lagers.
TCB Rating: 7/10
While it’s flavorful and unique, those looking for a traditional, fizzy beer might find Lazer Crush a bit more like a cask beer. However, it’s a tasty option worth trying.
Why Go Alcohol-Free?
Going alcohol-free, even for a short period, has significant health benefits. Studies show that six months after participating in Dry January, seven out of ten people continue to drink less. Benefits include:
Better Sleep: Enjoy deeper, more restorative sleep without alcohol disrupting your sleep cycle.
Lower Blood Pressure: Reducing alcohol intake can help lower your blood pressure, reducing the risk of heart-related issues.
Improved Liver Function: Give your liver a break and improve its overall function by cutting out alcohol.
Weight Management: Alcohol is high in empty calories. By reducing your intake, you might find it easier to manage your weight.
Practical Tips for a Successful Dry January
Set Clear Goals: Understand why you want to participate in Dry January and set clear, achievable goals.
Find Alternatives: Stock up on your favorite alcohol-free beers and other non-alcoholic beverages to make the transition easier.
Stay Social: Engage in social activities that don’t revolve around drinking. Try coffee dates, outdoor activities, or game nights.
Monitor Your Progress: Keep track of how you feel and any changes you notice in your health and well-being.
Seek Support: Join online communities or involve friends and family to keep you motivated.
Consult Your GP
If you’re concerned about your current alcohol intake or have any health conditions, the NHS recommends consulting your GP before making significant changes, such as participating in Dry January.
