Espresso lovers, rejoice! There’s a captivating trend taking the specialty coffee world by storm: single-origin espressos. Unlike traditional blends, these espressos hail from a single farm or cooperative, offering a pure and unadulterated taste experience. At The Coffee Blog (TCB), we’re diving deep into this exciting realm to bring you the inside scoop on what makes single-origin espressos so special and how you can savor their unique flavors.
The Single-Origin Espresso Debate
For years, the coffee community has debated the merits of single-origin espressos versus blends. Critics argued that single-origin coffees, when subjected to the intense extraction process of espresso, could come out sharp, shallow, or unbalanced. Blends, on the other hand, were believed to offer a harmonious balance by combining different beans to achieve the desired complexity.
However, our latest tasting event challenges these notions. We found that single-origin espressos can indeed provide the balance, body, and richness we associate with great espresso, all while showcasing the distinct characteristics of their origin.
The Thrill of Unique Flavors
One of the most exciting aspects of single-origin espressos is the sheer diversity of flavors. These coffees reflect the unique terroir of their origins, resulting in a wide array of taste profiles. At a recent tasting hosted by Temple Coffee in Sacramento, California, we sampled an impressive range of single-origin espressos. From bright and floral to deep and chocolaty, each cup told its own story.
The overall quality of the 26 samples we tasted was extraordinary, with no coffee scoring below 85 and an average rating just under 90. Most were roasted to a medium or medium-light level, enhancing their natural flavors without overshadowing them with excessive roastiness.
A Glimpse into Exceptional Single-Origin Espressos
Let’s explore some standout single-origin espressos that left a lasting impression on our palates:
Bright and Balanced Beauties
- Terroir Ethiopia Yirgacheffe (94 points): This espresso captivated us with its bright lemon and floral notes, balanced beautifully by cocoa undertones.
- Olympia Burundi Kiryama (93 points): A delightful combination of high-toned fruit and citrus, with a hint of chocolate, made this espresso a favorite.
- Café Grumpy Colombia El Paraiso (91 points): Lightly roasted to highlight lemon, honey, and floral characteristics, this espresso transformed elegantly when paired with milk.
Deep and Resonant Revelations
- Las Chicas Del Café Nicaragua (94 points): A complex blend of stone fruit, berry, nut, and dark chocolate flavors made this espresso a standout.
- Victrola Bolivia Caranavi (94 points): Rich nut-toned and fudge-like chocolate sensations, complemented by low-acid fruit, created a memorable cup.
The Edgy Dry-Processed Delights
Dry-processed or natural coffees can introduce unique flavors through the fermentation process. While some tasters appreciate these fruity and occasionally musty notes, others find them divisive.
- Novo Coffee Ethiopia Anyetsu (91 points): This espresso offered a clean taste with subtle hints of fruit, flirting only slightly with ferment notes.
- Velton’s Mexico Nayarita (90 points): Deep stone fruit and chocolate flavors impressed some tasters, although a slight musty edge sparked debate.
- Muddy Dog Brazil Moreninha Formosa Raisin (92 points): With fruit dried on the tree, this espresso showcased pungent earthy and grapefruity notes, delighting those who appreciate a bold profile.
Defining Single-Origin Coffees
The term “single-origin” can be broad, often encompassing coffees from a single farm, cooperative, or wet mill. For a more precise definition, we might consider “single-lot” coffees, which come from a specific, limited lot within a single farm or mill.
However, coffee production methods can blur these lines. For instance, the Las Chicas Del Café El Patron Espresso (94 points) combined beans from the same farm but processed in two different ways: dried-in-the-fruit and washed. This on-the-farm blending contributed to its exceptional complexity and depth.
The Importance of Blind Tasting
At TCB, we believe in the value of blind tasting espressos using standardized preparation protocols. This method allows us to evaluate each coffee impartially, free from biases and preconceived notions. By subjecting all samples to the same brewing parameters, we ensure a fair comparison and provide our readers with honest, reliable reviews.
While some espressos might perform better with specific brewing adjustments, those that excel under standard conditions demonstrate their versatility. This is crucial for home baristas with limited control over brewing variables, ensuring they can enjoy a consistently excellent cup.
