Unveiling the Realities of Coffee Worker Wages: Insights and Solutions

At The Coffee Blog (TCB), we believe in shedding light on all aspects of the coffee industry, from the perfect brew to the people who make it possible. Recently, Go Fund Bean released eye-opening findings from their comprehensive coffee worker wage survey in the United States. The results not only highlight disparities in compensation but also underscore the challenges faced by coffee professionals across the nation.

Understanding the Survey Insights

Back in November, Go Fund Bean initiated a wage survey aimed at unraveling wage inequalities within the specialty coffee sector. Their objective was clear: to gather data that could lead to meaningful changes in how coffee workers are compensated.

The survey, which garnered 240 responses from coffee workers nationwide—comprising 160 hourly employees and 80 salaried workers—has unveiled critical insights into the industry’s pay structure. One striking revelation was the significant disparity in earnings between hourly and salaried positions, particularly evident in roles like cafe managers and head roasters. Salaried employees, on average, earned nearly double the income of their hourly counterparts performing the same roles. Moreover, a staggering 92% of salaried workers reported receiving benefits, primarily health insurance and paid time off, while 38% of hourly workers received no benefits at all.

Challenges Faced by Baristas

For baristas—the frontline ambassadors of coffee culture—the survey painted a challenging picture. On average, baristas work 26 hours per week, yet they are often expected to be available full-time. This expectation makes it difficult for them to seek additional income streams. Before tips, the average hourly wage for baristas stands at $14, translating to an annual income of approximately $18,900. However, with tips factored in—where 60% of tipped employees earn an additional $100-$300 weekly—annual earnings can range from $24,100 to $34,500.

Despite these earnings, 49% of hourly respondents expressed difficulty in comfortably paying their bills each month—a stark contrast to the 20% of salaried workers facing similar challenges. This disparity underscores the financial strain faced by hourly coffee workers, exacerbated by economic factors such as inflation.

The Impact and Call to Action

Reflecting on these findings, Adam JacksonBey, founder of Go Fund Bean, expressed concern over the industry’s overreliance on tips to supplement income. He highlighted that the purchasing power of $20,000 annually, previously considered a modest income, has been eroded by recent inflation rates. This situation, where essential workers struggle to make ends meet despite their contributions to the coffee industry, demands urgent attention.

Moving Forward: Solutions and Support

To address these challenges effectively, stakeholders within the coffee industry must take proactive steps:

Advocate for Fair Wages: Coffee businesses should prioritize equitable pay structures that reflect the value of their employees’ contributions. This includes revisiting hourly rates and ensuring access to benefits such as healthcare and paid leave.

Educate and Empower: Empower coffee workers with knowledge about their rights and entitlements. Resources like Go Fund Bean’s wage survey data and MIT’s living wage calculator can empower individuals to advocate for fair compensation based on local cost of living standards.

Support Ethical Practices: Encourage coffee businesses to adopt ethical practices that prioritize worker well-being. This includes transparency in pay scales, opportunities for career advancement, and fostering a supportive workplace culture.
