Welcome to The Coffee Blog (TCB), Southern Africa’s ultimate destination for all things coffee! Today, we’re delving into the art of making Cafe Cubano, a drink that’s not just a beverage but a cultural institution for Cubans and coffee lovers worldwide. Whether you’re a connoisseur or new to the world of Cuban coffee, this guide will take you step-by-step through crafting the perfect cup of Cafe Cubano right in your own kitchen.

What Makes Cafe Cubano Special?

Imagine coffee that’s not just a drink but a bold, concentrated shot of energy. Cafe Cubano, much like its cultural counterpart tequila, is meant to be enjoyed with a quick sip rather than savored slowly. It’s double the strength of American coffee, infused with a generous amount of sugar, and served in tiny, thimble-sized cups known as tacitas. This potent brew isn’t just a morning pick-me-up—it’s a ritual, a tradition deeply rooted in Cuban daily life and social gatherings.

Crafting Cafe Cubano: The Stovetop Espresso Method

Equipment You’ll Need:

  • Stovetop espresso maker (Moka pot)
  • Freshly ground Cuban-style coffee (fine grind)
  • Cold water
  • Sugar (optional)
  • Metal cup
  • Tacitas or demitasse cups

Step-by-Step Guide:

Step 1: Prepare Your Stovetop Espresso Maker

  • Disassemble the espresso maker and fill the bottom chamber with ice-cold water up to the bolt inside.
  • Insert the metal filter cup into the bottom chamber and tightly pack it with finely ground coffee, leveling it off at the top.
  • Screw the espresso maker together and place it on a hot burner set to high heat.

Step 2: Brewing the Coffee

  • As the coffee starts to percolate into the top chamber of the espresso maker, take a metal cup and add about one teaspoon of sugar for each tacita you plan to make.
  • Once the first trickles of coffee emerge, pour a small amount into the metal cup to moisten the sugar. Mix vigorously until it forms a light paste.

Step 3: Perfecting the Brew

  • Keep an eye on the espresso maker and remove it from the heat once the top chamber is about 3/4 full to prevent burning or overflowing.
  • Slowly pour the brewed coffee into the metal cup containing the sugar paste, gently stirring as you pour. With practice, this technique will create a frothy foam on top of the coffee.

Step 4: Serving Cafe Cubano

  • Pour the prepared Cafe Cubano into tacitas or demitasse cups. Traditionally, it’s enjoyed as a quick shot or alongside a meal for a burst of intense flavor.

Cafe con Leche: The Cuban Coffee with Milk

Cafe con leche, the milder cousin of Cafe Cubano, offers a comforting twist with its blend of coffee and warm milk. Here’s how you can prepare this classic Cuban breakfast staple:

  • Heat milk in a pot until steaming (whole milk is traditional, but any type will work).
  • Fill a mug almost to the top with the hot milk.
  • Add a tacita of Cafe Cubano to the mug and stir gently to combine.

Enjoy your cafe con leche with toasted bread or Cuban crackers for a true taste of Cuba’s morning routine.

Tips for the Perfect Cafe Cubano Experience

  1. Choosing the Right Coffee: Opt for finely ground Cuban-style coffee or espresso blends for authenticity.
  2. Mastering the Sugar Mix: Experiment with the amount of sugar to find your preferred sweetness level. The sugar paste adds a unique texture and flavor to Cafe Cubano.
  3. Practice Makes Perfect: Brewing Cafe Cubano is as much an art as a science. Don’t be discouraged if your first attempt isn’t perfect—like any craft, it improves with practice.
  4. Enjoying Cafe con Leche: For a creamier coffee experience, adjust the ratio of coffee to milk in your cafe con leche until it suits your taste.
