From Tragedy to Triumph: Epiphanie Mukashyaka’s Journey

Imagine rebuilding your life after the devastation of the Rwandan genocide and civil war of 1994. This is where Epiphanie Mukashyaka’s story begins—a widow with little coffee farming experience who bravely took over her husband’s farm amidst uncertain times. Determined to forge ahead, Epiphanie transformed adversity into opportunity.

Initially using her earnings to buy cherries from neighboring farmers, Epiphanie united them to secure better prices—a promising start that faced challenges when global coffee prices plummeted. It was through perseverance and support from initiatives like PEARL (Partnership to Enhance Agriculture in Rwanda through Linkages) that Epiphanie found a lifeline. Mentored by PEARL’s director, Tim Shilling, she honed her coffee quality, paving the way for Bufcoffee to enter the specialty market and command higher prices for superior beans.

Bufcoffee: Empowering Communities, Elevating Quality

Today, Bufcoffee operates multiple washing stations, including the renowned Nyarusiza and Remera, processing cherries from over 7,000 small farms in Rwanda’s Bufundo region. Epiphanie’s commitment to quality extends beyond her own farms; she empowers local farmers through training, elevating both their coffee yield and economic standing. This dedication has not only earned Bufcoffee prestigious awards like the Golden Cup and Cup of Excellence multiple times but also transformed it into the largest employer in its community, offering higher wages and brighter futures to its workers.

Taste the Excellence: Flavors of Bufcoffee

What makes Bufcoffee’s beans so special? Award-winning coffees like Nyarusiza captivate with their intricate flavors. Our Head of Coffee, Will, describes Nyarusiza as a testament to Rwandan terroir. A blend of complex honey sweetness, vibrant blackberry notes, and a subtle acidity that evokes the essence of field-ripened fruit. Each sip of Bufcoffee is a journey through Rwanda’s lush landscapes and Epiphanie’s unwavering commitment to quality.

Brewing Tips: Enjoying Bufcoffee at Home

To savor Bufcoffee’s flavors at their best:

  • Choose Your Brew Method: Use a pour-over or French press for a clean, nuanced taste.
  • Grind Fresh: Grind coffee beans just before brewing for optimal freshness.
  • Water Quality: Use filtered water heated to around 200°F (93°C) for brewing.
  • Brewing Ratio: Aim for a coffee-to-water ratio of 1:16 to balance strength and flavor.
  • Experience Unfiltered: Appreciate Bufcoffee’s complexities without additives to enjoy its true essence.
