The world of coffee blending is rich, nuanced, and endlessly fascinating. Much like a master perfumer blends fragrances to create a signature scent, coffee roasters meticulously combine beans from various origins to craft blends that deliver specific sensory experiences. This process not only allows for a consistent coffee experience over time but also offers an opportunity for roasters to infuse their unique narratives into each blend.
The Evolution of Coffee Blending
In the early days of coffee blending, it was rare for roasters to disclose the origins of the beans in their blends. Consumers were less concerned about the provenance of their coffee and more focused on the overall experience. However, as the specialty coffee movement gained momentum, transparency became key. Today, coffee drinkers are more knowledgeable and curious about what goes into their cup, demanding clarity on origin, processing methods, and tasting notes.
Back in 1997, Kenneth Davids, co-founder of Coffee Review, explored house blends in the publication’s first-ever report. At that time, the coffee landscape was dominated by large roasters like Starbucks and Peet’s, with blends often described only in the broadest terms. Fast forward to 2022, and the coffee scene has transformed dramatically. The variety of blends available now is staggering, with countless small and large roasters across the globe, each offering their own unique takes on the house blend.
House Blends: Tradition Meets Innovation
House blends have always been about delivering value, familiarity, and consistency. Yet, today’s roasters are pushing boundaries, creating blends that are not just reliable but also deeply expressive. These modern blends can evoke memories, tell stories, and even challenge our palates in exciting new ways.
Take, for instance, Kakalove Café’s Obsidian Mirror Blend. This darker roast, named for the Mayan stone, combines beans from El Salvador, Guatemala, and Honduras to create a deep, rich coffee with chocolatey notes and a comforting roastiness. It’s a blend designed to be enjoyed black, highlighting the roaster’s nod to Mayan cultural traditions.
Charlotte Coffee Company’s 704 Blend is another example of a blend that bridges the familiar with the novel. Named after the North Carolina city’s area code, this blend features Tsekaka Papua New Guinea and Guatemala Finca San Gerardo beans, resulting in a super-sweet, caramel-rich cup with floral and nutty undertones.
The Rise of the Omni Blend
A notable trend in recent years is the emergence of the “omni” or “all-purpose” blend. These blends are designed to perform well across various brewing methods, from espresso to cold brew to pour-over. The idea is to simplify our coffee choices without sacrificing quality or complexity.
San Diego-based Nostalgia Coffee’s Memory Lane Blend is a standout omni blend. Crafted to be versatile and approachable, it features beans from Brazil, Guatemala, and Sumatra. This blend offers body, nutty sweetness, and earthy depth, making it a perfect choice for any time of day.
Battlecreek Coffee’s House Blend also exemplifies the omni approach. Combining natural Ethiopia Shakiso and washed Guatemala Huehuetenango beans, this blend is designed to be enjoyed in espresso drinks, cold brew, pourover, and batch brew formats. It’s a gently bright, spice-toned, and citrusy blend that is both versatile and crowd-pleasing.
Creative Originals: Pushing Boundaries
Some roasters are taking the concept of blending to new heights, creating coffees that defy conventional categorizations. These blends are experimental, bold, and often polarizing, but they offer a thrilling departure from the norm.
Old Soul’s Whiskey Dreams is a perfect example. This blend isn’t barrel-aged as the name might suggest. Instead, it uses a natural-processed Ethiopia component that evokes the sweet ferment of whiskey, combined with a Sumatra Adsenia Triple Pick. The result is a modern take on the classic mocha java blend, rich with fruit and chocolate notes.
Similarly, St1 Cafe in Tainan City, Taiwan, offers the Black Level Blend, which combines Kenya and Colombia beans. This deep-toned, sweetly savory blend features notes of cocoa nib, ripe tomato, lemon verbena, star jasmine, and cedar. It’s an adventurous blend that showcases the roaster’s commitment to innovation.
Fumi Coffee’s First Love Blend is perhaps the most experimental of all. Combining a natural-processed Ethiopia, a double-washed Kenya, and a Colombia fermented in a specially prepared culture of yeasts, sugars, and passionfruit, this blend is an umami-fruit bomb. It’s a coffee that not everyone will love, but those who do, really do.
Reconsidering Blends: A New Appreciation
The art of coffee blending is more vibrant and diverse than ever. Whether you’re a fan of classic, comforting blends or adventurous, boundary-pushing creations, there’s a blend out there that will resonate with you.
