Welcome back to The Coffee Blog (TCB), Southern Africa’s largest coffee blog website! Today, we’re diving into the wonderful world of cold brew coffee. If you’ve never tried making cold brew at home, this article is sure to inspire you. Even if you’re a seasoned cold brew enthusiast, you might discover a new reason to love this smooth, refreshing coffee. So, let’s get started!

1. Simple to Make

Making cold brew coffee is incredibly straightforward. Just add cold water to coarsely ground coffee and let it steep for about 24 hours. After that, filter out the grounds, and you’re done! It’s a simple process that anyone can master. Here at TCB, we have detailed tutorials for various brewers, but the basic steps are the same.

Cold brew coffee isn’t rocket science, and its simplicity is one of its greatest appeals.

2. Easy to Adjust Strength

One of the best things about cold brew is how easy it is to fix if it’s too weak or too strong. If your cold brew turns out too weak, you can simply extend the brewing time. Some brewers, like the Penguin, allow you to remove and then reinsert the filter for extended brewing.

If your cold brew is too strong, don’t worry! Most cold brews are made as concentrates, so you can dilute it with water to your preferred strength. After a couple of brewing cycles, you’ll find your perfect balance of coffee grounds, water, and brewing time.

For example, I fill my Penguin filter about 70% full with medium-coarse coffee grounds, then fill the brewer 100% with water and brew for 24-30 hours. I usually cut the concentrate 50% with water, while my roommate prefers a stronger mix and cuts it 25% with water.

3. Saves Time – Perfect for Non-Morning People

Having a quart of cold brew concentrate in the fridge means you don’t need to spend time brewing coffee in the morning. Previously, I’d make an AeroPress first thing every morning, going through the steps of heating water, weighing beans, grinding coffee, and brewing. Now, I just pour my pre-made cold brew and I’m good to go.

If you’re not a morning person, cold brew can be a lifesaver. It’s quick, easy, and there’s no need to fumble with coffee-making equipment before you’re fully awake.

4. Power Outages are No Problem

During a power outage, you can’t grind coffee or heat water, but if you have cold brew already made, you’re set. This makes cold brew perfect for camping trips, long road trips, or any situation where you might not have access to electricity.

5. Old Coffee Works Great

Cold brew is very forgiving, making it a great way to use up old coffee. Coffee shops often use coffee that’s past its prime for cold brew because the process can mask some of the staleness. I’ve used medium to lightly roasted coffee that was two months old to make cold brew, and it still tasted delicious.

Using up old coffee that you’d otherwise throw away is not only economical but also reduces waste.

6. Cold Brew is Quiet

If you live with others and wake up before them, cold brew is a quieter option compared to grinding beans and boiling water. Pouring a glass of cold brew lets you enjoy your coffee without waking anyone up.

7. Perfect for Just a Sip

Sometimes, you might want just a small amount of coffee in the afternoon without making a whole cup. Cold brew is perfect for this. You can take a sip or two without worrying about waste. It’s also great for those trying to reduce their caffeine intake, as you can have small amounts to stave off headaches without drinking a full mug.

8. Tastes Great Hot or Cold

Cold brew isn’t just for drinking cold. It tastes great heated up as well. For a warm cup, I heat my cold brew in the microwave for 55 seconds, stir, then heat for another 36 seconds. This brings it to the perfect temperature without overheating it. Every microwave is different, so you might need to adjust the times.

9. Easy on the Stomach

Cold brew is known for its low acidity, making it easier on the stomach. I used to drink black coffee on an empty stomach without issues, but last year, I started experiencing minor stomach discomfort. Cold brew has been a game-changer for me. I can now drink coffee on an empty stomach without any issues.

10. New Cold Brewers Make Brewing Easier

New cold brewers have made the process even easier. Older cold brewers required you to measure water and coffee precisely and were a hassle to clean. Modern cold brewers like the Penguin and Alkani come with fine-mesh metal filters, making cleanup a breeze. Just remove the filter, empty the grounds, rinse, and you’re ready for the next brew.

Getting Started with Cold Brew

If you’re new to cold brew, you can start with a French Press, but dedicated cold brewers are more convenient and effective. Look into brewers like the Penguin or Alkani, which are designed specifically for cold brewing. They usually have sturdy glass frames, metal filters, and come in various sizes to suit your needs.

Other Reasons to Love Cold Brew

Cold brew is also great for coffee-based cocktails and is a fantastic addition to camping or backpacking trips. The versatility and ease of cold brew make it a favorite among coffee enthusiasts.

Conclusion

Cold brew coffee is simple, convenient, and versatile. Whether you’re a morning person or not, cold brew can save you time and effort. It’s perfect for power outages, camping trips, and using up old coffee. Plus, it’s gentle on the stomach and can be enjoyed hot or cold.
