Coffee Brew Guide: French Press

Share With Your Friends

The French press remains a beloved method for brewing coffee at home, cherished for its simplicity, affordability, and the rich, full-bodied cup it produces. Dating back to the 1920s, the French press has a rich history, with its roots tracing back to Italy.

The modern French press, as we know it today, gained popularity in France in the 1950s, thanks to innovators like Mayer and Delforge, who patented versions of the press pot using metal or nylon mesh screens and glass or stainless steel containers.

By the 1960s, the French press had become a staple in many households, with various companies producing their own designs while maintaining the fundamental concept.

French Press Recipe:

Equipment:

  • French Press
  • Coffee Beans
  • Kettle
  • 96°C Water

Ingredients:

  • Brew Ratio 1:15
  • Coarse Grind Coffee Beans

Method:

  1. Preparation:
    • Warm your French press by rinsing it with just-boiled water. Discard this water.
    • Add freshly ground coffee to the base of your French press carafe.
  2. Brewing:
    • Pour 50ml – 100ml water in a circular motion over the coffee grounds to saturate them. Give a gentle stir and wait for about 30 seconds to allow the coffee to bloom*.
    • Pour the remaining water into the carafe to complete your brew ratio.
    • Let the coffee steep for five minutes.
  3. Plunge & Serve:
    • Plunge the French press slowly, then serve and enjoy your freshly brewed coffee!

Brew Ratios:

  • 3 Cup: 20g coffee / 300g water
  • 6 Cup: 40g coffee / 600g water
  • 8 Cup: 60g coffee / 900g water

Notes:

  • Bloom: During the bloom phase, coffee grounds inflate and bubbles appear as gas releases from the coffee, allowing the water to extract the full potential of the coffee’s aromatics and oils.
  • Adjust Brew Ratio: Customize the strength and flavor by adjusting the coffee-to-water ratio. Decrease the ratio for a stronger brew.

Brewing coffee with a French press is a delightful experience, offering a rich and flavorful cup that’s perfect for any time of day. Experiment with different beans and ratios to find your ideal brew.
