The Search for the Perfect Mug

For those of you who enjoyed my previous story about my kitten destroying my Kona plant, you might think nothing could top that. But today’s tale is even more heartbreaking. This is a story of finding the perfect coffee mug, owning it, and then witnessing its demise. Think of it as a coffee lover’s version of Romeo and Juliet, where Juliet is not a person, but a beloved coffee mug.

The Beginning

The year was 1998, and I was working at Nielsen Media Research (NMR) in Clearwater, Florida. At NMR, we developed software applications centered around Nielsen TV ratings and other media metrics. As a software development house, we were frequently courted by third-party vendors eager to sell us their databases, code libraries, and other tools to enhance our products.

Vendors needed management approval for purchases, but they also had to win over the developers. And developers, myself included, were often swayed by freebies like bagels, t-shirts, mousepads, and, of course, coffee mugs. Sometimes, a $200,000 contract could hinge on who provided the best swag—a humorous yet true fact of the tech world.

The Forbidden Love

One of our development groups was being wooed by a company called MicroStrategy. At that time, I was building a coffee mug collection. I heard that MicroStrategy was distributing mugs to that group, but since my collection was becoming unwieldy, I didn’t pay much attention. I didn’t need another mug cluttering my cabinet.

Then, one day, I saw a developer walking by with the mug, and it was love at first sight. This mug wasn’t just any mug; it was tall, black, and adorned with a cool picture of a 1940s-style agent promoting something called DSS Agent. But what really set it apart was the handle—a large, blocked handle that fit all four fingers comfortably. The moment I grabbed it, I knew this was my Excalibur. But it belonged to another group, and they knew it was too good to trade.

The Mug Heist

A few days later, in the break room, I spotted one of the coveted mugs by the sink, caked with old coffee. Either someone hadn’t cleaned their mug, or they left it there hoping someone else would. I decided I’d clean it for them—back at my house. When the break room was empty, I slipped the mug into a plastic bag and sneaked out the back door. I buried it under the seat of my car and drove home, thankful that no one saw me or came looking for the mug.

Finally, the mug of my dreams and I were united.

Cherishing the Perfect Mug

I never brought the mug back to work, fearing it might be noticed. Instead, I drank my morning, evening, and weekend coffee exclusively from it. The coffee seemed to taste better from this mug. Its larger size was perfect for a single French press, and the comfortable handle made it a joy to hold. My other mugs, with their cramped handles, paled in comparison.

The Tragic End

The fairy tale ended on January 26th, 2000. By then, I had moved to the Washington, D.C., metro area. On that fateful day, I left for work at 6 a.m. to avoid the traffic that typically snarls during snowstorms. This was no ordinary snowstorm; it was a semi-blizzard that blanketed the roads and sidewalks with about 12 inches of snow.

While trudging through the blinding storm from my car to the building, I dropped the bag holding my precious mug. When I got inside, I saw the mug in pieces. My perfect mug, my cherished coffee companion, was shattered.

Embracing the Rituals

The loss of my perfect mug was devastating, but it also taught me an important lesson about the rituals and objects that enrich our daily coffee experiences. While I may never find another mug that matches the perfection of my lost love, the journey of discovering new favorites continues.

Practical Tips for Finding Your Perfect Coffee Mug

Here are some tips to help you find (and hopefully keep) your own perfect coffee mug:

Consider Size and Shape: Find a mug that fits your preferred coffee volume and brewing method. A larger mug might be ideal for a French press, while a smaller one might suit an espresso.

Comfortable Handle: Ensure the handle is comfortable to hold, especially if you drink multiple cups a day. Look for handles that accommodate all your fingers without cramping.

Material Matters: Choose a mug made from durable material like ceramic or stainless steel. These retain heat well and are generally more robust.

Personal Aesthetic: Pick a design that brings you joy. Whether it’s a minimalist style, a quirky pattern, or a nostalgic theme, your mug should reflect your personality.

Care and Maintenance: Treat your mug with care. Avoid sudden temperature changes that can cause cracking, and hand wash if it’s particularly special.

Backup Plan: Consider having a backup favorite in case of accidents. While it won’t replace your perfect mug, it can soften the blow of a loss.
