One of the simplest and most beneficial ways to reuse coffee grounds is in your garden. Even if you’re not an avid gardener, sprinkling used coffee grounds on your lawn can have a positive impact. Here’s how coffee can work wonders for your plants and soil:
Coffee grounds are rich in nitrogen, a vital nutrient for plant growth. Simply sprinkle used grounds around the base of your plants before watering. Alternatively, you can create a liquid fertilizer by mixing approximately 10 grams of grounds with one liter of water. This nutrient-rich mix can boost the health and vitality of your garden plants.

If all the world’s used coffee grounds were processed this way, it could generate approximately 340 million gallons of biodiesel per year. The concept of a coffee-powered car might sound like something out of a sci-fi movie, but it’s a reality. The original coffee-powered car, nicknamed the “Car-puccino,” was built by inventor Martin Bacon and his team in partnership with the BBC. This innovative vehicle made it into the Guinness Book of Records in March 2010 for the longest journey by a coffee-powered car, traveling from London to Manchester. Re-Work, a company dedicated to sustainable innovation, has developed “Curface” (pronounced surface), a composite material made from used coffee grounds and recycled plastic. Curface is similar to wood in its uses; it can be sawn, sanded, and shaped into various forms. It comes in flat sheets like MDF or plywood, making it ideal for tabletops, worktops, and other surfaces. Unlike wood, Curface is waterproof and doesn’t require additional treatment, offering durability and sustainability in one package.
In Japan, Colors Tokyo has created Lego-like bricks called “Earth Blocks,” made from sawdust, cedar bark shavings, and used tea leaves and coffee grounds. These eco-friendly building blocks are perfect for kids, providing a fun and educational way to engage with sustainable materials. Although they are currently available in only four colors and are relatively expensive, the concept highlights the versatility and potential of repurposing coffee grounds.
