The Quest for Good Coffee in the Office

Share With Your Friends

Remember your first day of school? That feeling of leaving the comfort of home, venturing into the unknown, surrounded by strangers? For many, transitioning from college to their first office job evokes a similar emotional rollercoaster. In college, you’re often spoiled with espresso carts and perfectly crafted lattes at the student union. But in the office, you’re confronted with a grim reality: the dreaded office coffee pot filled with hours-old sludge. Should we, like we did in school, learn to adapt without our beloved quality coffee? Absolutely not!

Don’t Succumb to Bad Coffee

You might think, “I need coffee to stay awake at this boring job, so I must drink the break room swill.” Not so fast. I’ve dedicated my working career to discovering ways to enjoy quality coffee in the office. Before I share my journey, let me discourage you from settling for subpar office coffee.

Break room coffee is usually cheap and low quality. Even if it bears a gourmet label, chances are it’s an “office-grade” version, which means old and stale. Coffee, unlike fine wine or scotch, doesn’t improve with age. And even if your company does pride itself on good coffee purchases, you still face the uncertainty of who made it and when. We’ve all been to meetings with incompetent colleagues—do you trust them to make your coffee correctly? I didn’t think so. Unless you want to stalk the break room to ensure you’re the one brewing the coffee, you risk ending up with poorly made or old coffee.

The Journey Part 1: The Hidden Espresso Machine

My first office job was with an IBM company, which had a strict policy against bringing in electrical appliances. However, my craving for espresso was stronger. Early one morning, I snuck my countertop espresso machine into the office. Since I couldn’t place it on my desk, I cleverly hid it inside the bottom desk drawer, threading the cord through the back to plug it in. Voila! An operational espresso machine running from the bottom drawer—my perfect coffee crime.

For several months, I made espressos from my desk drawer. A few colleagues, in the know, would sneak by with cups of iced milk for an upgrade to iced lattes. The aroma of freshly brewed espresso wafted through the office, but only a select few knew the secret of the clandestine coffee club.

The Journey Part 2: The Desk Drip Machine

After IBM, I joined Nielsen Media Research, where the environment was much more relaxed. Here, I boldly set up a drip machine on my desk and started an official coffee club. Every morning at 9 AM and afternoon at 1 PM, I brewed quality coffee from local roasters or my home roast creations. Although I didn’t charge for coffee, a 50-cent donation to cover the cost of beans was welcomed. Those who didn’t contribute found themselves outside the club.

Soon, employees lined up as the coffee brewed, and interest grew so much that we had a waiting list. If a member didn’t show up on time, they were promptly replaced. This coffee club was a hit and required minimal effort to manage. When I eventually left Nielsen, I donated my drip pot to my coworkers, and the coffee club continued from my old cubicle.

The Journey Part 3: The French Press Revelation

The third and final part of my coffee journey brought me to the French press. With this method, I no longer needed to run a coffee club or use electrical appliances. All I needed was hot water, which was readily available from the office hot water dispenser used for tea. Now, I could brew a single mug of coffee whenever I wanted using my own beans.

The French press offered simplicity and quality. If you have access to a hot water dispenser, I highly recommend getting a French press for your desk. Bring in your own supply of freshly ground coffee every morning, and you’ll never have to suffer through bad office coffee again.

Tips for Brewing Quality Coffee in the Office

  • Invest in a Good Grinder: Freshly ground coffee beans make a world of difference. Consider a small, portable grinder that you can use at your desk.
  • Use Fresh Beans: Store your coffee beans in an airtight container to maintain their freshness. Bringing a small amount to the office daily ensures you always have fresh beans.
  • Consider a Pour-Over Setup: If you have the time and space, a pour-over setup can be an excellent way to brew a high-quality cup of coffee at work.
  • Cold Brew: For a refreshing alternative, make a batch of cold brew at home and bring it to the office. It’s less acidic and can be stored in the fridge for a few days.
  • Milk Frother: A small, handheld milk frother can elevate your coffee game, allowing you to make lattes and cappuccinos with ease.

Conclusion

Just because you’ve entered the working world doesn’t mean you have to endure bad coffee. With a bit of creativity and some basic equipment, you can enjoy quality coffee in the office. Whether you opt for a hidden espresso machine, a desk drip machine, or the simplicity of a French press, there are plenty of ways to elevate your office coffee experience.

Don’t settle for break room sludge. Take charge of your coffee needs and bring in your own quality brew. If your current workplace doesn’t appreciate good coffee, perhaps it’s time to consider a new employer who does. After all, life is too short for bad coffee.
